What is reading comprehension ??Reading comprehension is the ability to process text, understand its meaning, and to integrate with what the reader already knows. … An individual’s ability to comprehend text is influenced by their skills and their ability to process information.The definition of comprehension also refers to your ability to understand something, or your actual understanding of something. An example of comprehension is how well you understand a difficult math problem.Although word recognition, decoding, and fluency are building blocks of effective reading, the ability to comprehend text is the ultimate goal of reading instruction. Comprehension is a prerequisite for acquiring content knowledge and expressing ideas and opinions through discussion and writing.Examples of comprehension skills that can be taught and applied to all reading situations include:Summarizing.Sequencing.Inferencing.Comparing and contrasting.Drawing conclusions.Self-questioning.Problem-solving.Relating background knowledge.Many times because kids on the autism spectrum lack in reading skills it is very difficult to teach the comprehension .This doesn’t mean that we can’t work on comprehension skills we can always evolve the skills by actually using visuals and increase the WH capacity-of a child .We can start with small passages and ask WH questions to the kid by showing visual cues.This will make a child understand the basic Wh questions like who is a person ,where is a place ,when is a time etc.Here are the steps and ways involved to remember while working on comprehension skills with your child also Here is a small passage with visual cue that will give you can idea as to ,how you can make your child derive facts and answers from the passage.Hope you will create many of the passages and help your child in boosting their WH power.Thanks for reading.
